The Hume City population forecast for for 2020 is 241,000 and is forecast to grow to 311,776 by 2035. The number of primary school age children will increase to 25,833 in 2025 and 32,388 by 2035. The number of secondary school age children will increase to 19,910 in 2025 and 24,946 by 2035.
Over the next 20+ years as Hume continues to grow, it is anticipated that there will be a need for an additional 21 State Primary and Secondary schools to be delivered by the Victorian government in order to meet future population demands.
These schools together with a number of non-government school sites have been identified in current Precinct Structure Plans in Craigieburn, Greenvale and Mickleham, with others under development in Sunbury.
Hume City is not alone in needing new state schools. The One Melbourne of Two report prepared by Essential Economics identified that there are over 380 Primary and Secondary Schools needed in the Interface areas between 2011 and 2036.
Why is it important?
The provision of higher-order services (such as better public transport options, major hospitals, TAFEs, schools, kindergartens, aged care facilities etc), will considerably improve liveability in the growth and Interface areas.
These communities, already hamstrung by inadequate public transport and a lack of available and appropriate employment opportunities, need community and state infrastructure located within their communities so that they don’t experience social isolation and are not required to spend time in their cars travelling outside of their communities which increases congestion on our roads and reduces the time that they have to spend with their family and friends.
An annual allocation of State Government infrastructure funds to facilitate quality local educational opportunities will provide the certainty families and our community needs.
The support we need
We need the Victorian Government to invest in an annual Interface Schools Infrastructure Fund to support the provision of new or upgraded State School infrastructure in the outer suburbs of Melbourne.
