Mayor Kurt - URBNSURF

Summer is officially over, and 2024 well and truly in full swing, as is the return to work and everyday commitments.

But, there’s still plenty of opportunity to have some fun in your own backyard with the warm weather not quite done with yet in Hume.

Cr. Naim Kurt, Mayor of Hume City, recently traded his Council office for a different kind at one of Hume’s premier tourism locations, ‘URBNSURF Melbourne’, in Tullamarine.

As a leader and strong advocate for making our suburbs more livable, Cr. Kurt is more than aware of the critical role attractions like URBNSURF play for the local economy.

“Hume’s visitor economy has an important role to play in supporting local jobs and enhancing the liveability of our city.”

The local job creation that comes with an increased visitor trade keeps people across a range of industries employed locally, while the local spend leads to direct investment into future development in our city.

Tourism is one of Hume City’s largest economic drivers and continues to grow, with an output of $2 billion and over 12,000 jobs, which Cr. Kurt points to as a major driver for economic prosperity.

“Hume city is the first stop for tourism when you fly into Melbourne, and we are so lucky to be home to amazing experiences such as URBNSURF.

“It's a completely unique venue in the heart of our municipality, where you can catch waves and learn to surf, as soon as you step off the plane into Victoria”

Residents and visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to things to see and do right here in Hume city.

Victoria’s only “Three Blue Ducks” dining experience accompanies URBNSURF, while nearby you can while away the hours with one of our most simple (and free) activities – plane spotting!

As a long running supporter of wheelchair tennis, Hume plays host to a number of lead-in events for the Australian Open, including the Victorian Open and Melbourne Wheelchair Tennis Open at Craigieburn’s Hume Tennis Centre.

For those that like to get out into nature, we have a mixture of family friendly experiences in Animal Land Children’s Land and Living Legends, where you can meet retired champion racehorses.

Woodlands Historic Park is a fantastic place to observe wild kangaroos in their natural habitat and you can also dine at the popular Woodlands Homestead Cafe which is renowned for its traditional Devonshire Tea.

Hume is also home to the closest wineries to the CBD including Marnong Estate and Arundel Farm Estate, with both offering cellar doors and a range of dining experiences.

Add in a mural series scattered across the city, art exhibitions, events and a host of diverse cafes and eateries, locals will be sure to be kept busy in their own backyard and tourists have plenty of reason to visit.

Cr. Kurt points out that all this being on the doorstop of the city’s airport means Hume is well on its way to establishing itself as an Australian tourism drawcard.

“Tourism is thriving in Hume and we are incredibly proud to be home to some amazing attractions and experiences like URBNSURF,” he says.
