CALM Cuts - Youth Barber Program

CALM Cuts is a positive masculinity and barbering program for young men aged 15 to 21, delivered in partnership between CALM Youth Limited and Hume City Council at the Broadmeadows Youth Hub. The program uses the barbershop as a culturally safe and familiar environment to create the conditions for honest conversations.

Each 2-hour session follows a consistent structure: an open circle yarn exploring a key discussion theme, a practical barbering skill taught by qualified local barbers, and a wrap-up focused on communication and reflection. The informal, hands-on nature of the barbershop lowers every barrier to engagement. Young men show up for the cut and stay for the conversation.

Program Goals

• Support young men to develop a broader, healthier understanding of masculinity and identity
• Reduce stigma around emotional expression and help-seeking behaviour
• Build genuine peer connection and community belonging across the Hume region
• Equip participants with practical barbering skills and a take-home starter kit
• Reduce youth disengagement through an accessible, community-based model
