Building a Better Hume Wordmark Orange.png

What we're doing

As part of the John Coutts Reserve Open Space Development project, we'll be:

  • creating new play spaces for a range of activities and abilities
  • delivering a scooter, bike and skate circuit
  • providing new spaces for social gatherings and community events
  • upgrading picnic facilities, including shelters, drinking fountains, shaded lawn areas and public toilets
  • adding multi-purpose sports courts and informal kick-about areas
  • installing additional park seating
  • enhancing the landscape with garden beds and tree planting
  • improving wayfinding signage
  • installing a bicycle repair station
  • improving path connections, including walking loops.

These upgrades will create a welcoming and flexible open space for everyday recreation, as well as social and community events.

Why we're doing it

John Coutts Reserve has been identified as a priority for upgrade in the Hume Open Space Strategy.

Planning for improvements to the reserve has been underway for many years, with community feedback helping to shape the project at every stage.

In 2021, our community told us they wanted Hume City to be a sustainable and thriving place, with strong connections, quality infrastructure and a strong sense of belonging.

As our community continues to grow, and as the way we live and use open spaces evolves, it’s more important than ever to provide places where people can come together.

This upgrade will deliver a quality open space for the Gladstone Park and broader Hume communities, creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to meet, relax and stay active in a safe and welcoming environment.

The proposed improvements focus on making the reserve more accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.

Timing and next steps

A concept plan has been developed and is available to view here.(PDF, 4MB)

Once the design is finalised, construction is expected to commence in September 2026, with completion anticipated by June 2027, subject to contractor availability and weather conditions.

We will continue to keep the community updated as the project progresses.
