What we are doing 

Council is reconstructing Cobden Street between Barry Road and Russell Street in Campbellfield. The works will renew the failed road pavement and kerb, improve drainage and reinstate associated road and pedestrian infrastructure.

The proposed works will include:

  • full road pavement reconstruction
  • kerb and channel reconstruction along both sides
  • new underground stormwater drainage infrastructure
  • reinstatement of vehicle crossings, indented parking bays, footpaths and nature strips
  • signage and line marking
  • reinstatement of detector loops at traffic signals and coordination with Department of Transport and Planning requirements (Barry Road adjacent to Cobden Street is a state-managed road and traffic management approval requirements apply)
  • lowering affected private gas and water services in coordination with the relevant service authorities (Yarra Valley Water and AusNet/Downer).

Why are we doing these works? 

The existing pavement and kerb are in very poor condition, with severe cracking and kerb displacement. The project will provide a stronger and more reliable road pavement, improved kerb and drainage performance, safer and more functional access, and reduced ongoing maintenance requirements for road users, adjoining properties and the local community.

When will works commence?

This project is currently in a design phase and we'll continue to keep the community informed once the construction program is established.

Site establishment and pre-commencement activities will occur before construction starts. Staged road reconstruction works are programmed to commence from the start of October 2026, with project completion programmed for the end of March 2027.

The community may experience temporary changed traffic conditions, pedestrian diversions, construction noise and access delays. Access to the medical centre, adjoining properties and nearby car parks will be maintained. Variable Message Sign (VMS) boards will be installed 14 days before works commence and retained for the duration of the works.

Community and stakeholder notifications will be undertaken before and during construction. Access arrangements will be coordinated with the medical centre, adjoining properties and the car parks at the north-west end of Cobden Street. Affected owners and occupiers will be consulted where temporary access changes are required.
