Hume City Council is proud to support “Wear Orange Wednesday” as a show of thanks to our hard-working Victoria State Emergency Service volunteers on Wednesday 17 May 2023.

Also known as WOW Day, communities right across Australia are encouraged to wear orange as a way to thank the people that give their time on the front-line, from flood and storm emergencies to road crash rescues.

To spread the love, Hume residents are asked to share a photo of themselves, their family and friends, or even their pet wearing orange on social media tagged #ThankYouSES.

In honour of these selfless volunteers, Hume City Council is lighting up Town Hall Broadmeadows in orange from sunset.

And you can catch the SES Fawkner Unit outside Town Hall Broadmeadows from 6.30pm to say #ThankYouSES for their dedicated service.

Part of the broader National Volunteer Week celebrations for the millions who commit themselves to making our communities better, WOW Day is a special acknowledgement for those who are on hand to protect our most vulnerable community members 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In Victoria, the past 12 months have been the busiest in the state’s SES history with VICSES volunteers responding to over 46,000 requests for assistance, in part driven by the destructive spring flood event.

Quotes attributable to Mayor of Hume City, Councillor Joseph Haweil

“Wear Orange Wednesday is a small way we can show our appreciation for the giant contributions our Hume VICSES volunteers make on a daily basis.”

“On a larger scale, Hume City Council will be proudly lighting up our iconic Town Hall as a way to celebrate the selfless volunteers who’ve shown incredible courage during a tough year for communities across Victoria.”
