Project Summary

Jack Roper Reserve in Broadmeadows is one of Hume’s most popular parks. We are committed to undertaking works to continue to improve its facilities and accessibility to park users.

What we've done

Stage 1 (completed)

  • Installed new accessible public toilets on the east side of the reserve, near the fitness equipment. This toilet facility is open during daylight hours.

  • New toilet, drinking fountain and spectator shelter adjacent to the soccer field. This toilet is open during sporting events and club bookings only.

Stage 2 (completed)

  • Path Upgrade: We've transformed the existing gravel path into a durable concrete shared-user path, making it safer and more accessible for cyclists, walkers, joggers, and people using prams or wheelchairs.

  • Stormwater Harvesting and Irrigation System: We've built a stormwater harvesting system to keep Jack Roper Reserve greener and more sustainable. The system saves around 6.4 million litres of drinking water each year, reduces pollution entering the lake, and helps make the reserve more resilient to the impacts of climate change.

At the heart of the system is a raingarden, where stormwater is filtered through layers of gravel, sand and vegetation to remove sediment and nutrients. The cleaned water is then further treated using ultraviolet (UV) light before being stored in a large underground tank.

The harvested water is reused through the existing irrigation system to keep the reserve green and healthy. This supports local plants and wildlife and ensures Jack Roper Reserve remains a vibrant space for the community to enjoy now and into the future.

Partnerships

The Stormwater Harvesting and Irrigation System project was delivered in partnership with Melbourne Water via the Liveable Communities, Liveable Waterways Program grant, which aims to support initiatives that help improve the health of waterways, through innovation and collaboration.

What's next?

Stage 3 (currently in the Design phase)

  • Investigating options for a path around the retarding basin (lake).
