Hume City Council is celebrating another successful Seniors Month in Hume, run every October to engage senior community members with their peers as part of the Victorian Seniors Festival.

And this year, we proudly congratulate two outstanding community members who were recognised at the 2025 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards for their remarkable contributions to our community.

Aunty Jo Russell – Emerging Impact Award

A proud Wiradyuri Elder and Hume Enviro Champion, Aunty Jo has dedicated years to cultural education and sustainability. Through Indigenous gardens, yarning circles, and school reflection days, she creates spaces for learning, reconciliation, and connection to Country. Her generosity and leadership continue to inspire our community and strengthen cultural understanding.

Lesley McCarthy – COTA Victoria Senior Achiever Award

Following a 35-year career in education, Lesley has continued her passion for literacy and lifelong learning through volunteering. She leads programs like the 1,000 Stories Project and Djerring Hub playgroup, helping children access books and build skills. Her decades of Rotary service and hands-on community work make her a true local leader and advocate for education.

These awards recognise the outstanding contributions of seniors who play a vital role in shaping a stronger, more connected Hume.

Their leadership, wisdom, and commitment to community initiatives demonstrate the powerful impact of lifelong service. From cultural education and sustainability projects to programs that promote literacy and inclusion, they inspire us all to create positive change.

We encourage everyone to learn more about their achievements and explore opportunities to get involved in local programs that foster connection, resilience, and shared learning.

By celebrating these champions and supporting community initiatives, we can continue building a Hume where every generation thrives.
