Work Experience and Tertiary Placements

Applications for 2025 secondary student work experience have now closed. Please check back early in 2026 for future opportunities.

Students are provided work experience opportunity to observe and learn, in a shadow capacity, in an area of their interest. The student will learn about the day-to-day operations and expected behaviours of the workplace.

Secondary students can apply for five consecutive days of work experience during the school term and will receive a payment of $10 per day under the Education Victoria Work Experience Arrangements. Students will be placed with a supervisor and can complete tasks in an area of their interest.

To be eligible, students must be: 

• year 10 or above
• at least 15 years of age at time of placement
• available to attend five consecutive days of placement

Areas for Secondary Work Experience

Secondary work experience opportunities are available in the following services, at locations across the Hume municipality:

• Early Years Centres provide early education to kindergarten children and long daycare.
• Leisure Centres is actively involved in direct recreational programs to ensure our community has access to a range of facilities and programs across the municipality.
• Library Services provide community members with books and resources to enjoy for leisure and entertainment.
• Venues Operations support internal staff and community members with their event bookings across our venue locations.
• Broadmeadows Office for June placement only, across professional roles such as communications, engineering or information technology

Expression of Interest Process

The Expression of Interest (EOI) process will be open in Term 1. Work Experience is available for Term 2, Term 3 and Term 4 of each year, aligned with the Victorian Government school term dates. We do not offer work experience in Term 1 or during the school holiday period.

Offers will only be made for the current term and term ahead, therefore EOIs received outside of the intake period will be requested to reapply. 

We aim to advise you within 10 business days via email if a placement can be arranged in your preferred work location and placement dates.

Placements will be confirmed upon receipt of the signed Victorian Work Experience Arrangement Form.

Tertiary placement provides eligible students completing a current tertiary course with practical experience relevant to their field of study. Students observe and perform work tasks under supervision, to complete the mandatory practical work placement component of their course. Supervised placement can be project or time based to meet the requirements as set out by the educational institution. The placement will be unpaid.

The student will be placed based on suitability and aligning the student’s needs with the objectives of Council’s Services.

To be eligible, students must be:

• at least 18 years of age
• enrolled at a registered educational institution
• studying in an area aligned with the objectives of the department
• able to provide evidence of a current Working with Children Check or Drivers Licence, where required

Areas for Tertiary Placements

Tertiary placement opportunities are available, from time to time, in the following Services:

• Active Living manages aquatic, leisure and sports facilities and recreational programs, suitable for people studying toward fitness and swim school certifications or related areas or sports development programs.
• Community Health and Wellbeing supports positive health outcomes for the community, suitable for people studying in related areas of community services, social work or public health.
• Early Years Centres provide early education to kindergarten children and long daycare, suitable for people studying Certificate or Degrees in early childhood education.
• Youth Engagement & Pathways delivering evidence-based programs to encourage the development of young people, suitable for people studying in the field of youth work and social work.

Expression of Interest Process

The Expression of Interest (EOI) process will open, from time to time, when the work area identifies opportunity to host a student in valuable work. The advertisement will include an overview of the service and nature of the work tasks, suitable qualifications other requirements of the work area.

An informal interview will be conducted by the host supervisor with shortlisted students to address:

• suitability of the student’s area of interest within the department
• the provision of work experiences and hours to meet the student’s course requirements
• mutual agreement for the student placement agreement.

Internships provide a paid employment arrangement for tertiary students, prior to their final year of study, engaged to perform meaningful and suitable work for Council. Students gain professional work experience, transitioning study into practical context, by delivering work tasks that contribute to business outcomes. The work may also fulfill the practical work placement component as required as part of the student’s course.

There are opportunities, from time to time, for tertiary students to be engaged in meaningful and immediate work, supporting teams with suitable project-based work deliverables.
