Work Experience

Hume City Council recognises the importance placed on work experience by educational institutions and students. As a large and diverse organisation, we are committed to providing a wide range of work experience options for as many students (secondary and further education) as practicable.

The number and timing of work experience students accepted into Council depends on our ability to provide effective on-the-job experience. Students will be given meaningful and challenging projects in a supportive work environment.

If we receive more work experience requests than can be placed, preference will be given to educational institutions within Hume and to students residing within the area. All work experience placements are coordinated through the Human Resources Department.

Payment

Generally, further education students do not receive any payment for work experience. Secondary students receive a minimum payment of $5 per day under the Education Victoria Work Experience Arrangements. Students will receive their money via cheque payment after their timesheet has been processed.

Working hours and supervision

Work experience students are required to start work at 9am and finish at 4.30pm, unless otherwise specified by the relevant manager or team leader. Students will report to either a coordinator or supervisor within the work unit in which their placement will be. The coordinator or supervisor will provide the student with assistance, mentoring and coaching during the work placement.

What you should wear

Business attire is required at Council if the student is completing their placement within an office environment. It is suggested that students speak to their coordinator or supervisor before the commencement date as there may be specific requirements for their work area.

Where Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for the role that the student is undertaking, this equipment will be provided by Council. However, students will need to supply their own steel capped boots if needed.
