Community Update Canterbury Avenue

Hume City Council would like to acknowledge and thank all community members who have taken the time to report concerns regarding an increase of heavy vehicle activity along Canterbury Avenue in Sunbury. Your vigilance and commitment to the safety and wellbeing of the community are greatly appreciated.

We understand that local residents are concerned about the volume of heavy vehicles using Canterbury Avenue. Council wishes to clarify that these truck movements are associated with activity on 370 Riddell Road, Sunbury, and not the properties that are currently subject to VCAT proceedings.

Council has, and continues, to publish updates on its website regarding the ongoing VCAT proceedings involving 370A and 430 Riddell Road, Sunbury. This matter is still before VCAT and is scheduled to be heard on early November 2025.

370A Riddell Road and 370 Riddell Road are separate parcels of land that are the subject of separate investigations and proceedings. The Council continues to monitor all above mentioned properties to ensure compliance with interim orders and planning regulations. In relation to the property at 370 Riddell Road, Council’s Planning Investigations team are actively investigating the activity taking place there. The landowner has advised that the works are related to farming, which would be exempt from a planning permit requirement. We are concerned that the scale of activity goes beyond what would be excepted for agricultural use and we are actively pursuing this.

Council’s ability to manage truck movements on public road is very limited.  To assist in effectively addressing these concerns, we kindly ask residents to consider the following when reporting issues in this area:

  1. Heavy Vehicle Traffic: Reports of excessive truck movements and unsafe activity along Canterbury Avenue should be directed to Victoria Police or the Sunbury Police Station.
  2. Regulatory Oversight: Concerns regarding heavy vehicle operations may also be reported to the Heavy Vehicle National Regulator (HVNR) for further investigation.

We remain committed to working collaboratively with the community and relevant authorities to ensure appropriate action is taken to address community concerns. Thank you once again for your continued support and engagement.

Should you have any further information that you believe may aid the investigation, please contact Council’s planning investigations team via email at Planninginvestigations@hume.vic.gov.au
