Elder abuse
What is Elder Abuse?
Elder abuse is any act that causes harm to an older person. Elder abuse can be perpetrated by anyone, but is often perpetrated by a family member, friend, or carer. It can take many forms, including:
- Physical abuse: Inflicting pain or injury (e.g., hitting, pushing).
- Emotional or psychological abuse: Intimidation, humiliation, or threats.
- Financial abuse: Misusing or stealing an older person’s money, assets, or property.
- Neglect: Failing to provide basic necessities such as food, shelter, or medical care.
- Sexual abuse: Any sexual contact without consent.
- Social abuse: Isolating the person from friends, family, or social networks.
Elder abuse often occurs in settings such as private homes, aged care facilities, or in community interactions, and can significantly affect an older person's dignity, health, and wellbeing.
