MURAL OF RESILIENCE 2025.jpg

Artists: Ghassan Fatoohi

‘Mural of Resilience’ – A collaborative community project lead by Arabic Welfare with Hume artist Ghassan Fatoohi.

This original artwork was co-designed with local Arabic speaking women and young people, to celebrate the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence.

The symbols in the artwork represent objects and emotions, identified as important by the community members who contributed to the design development:

The Arab horse is a powerful traditional symbol in Arabic Culture, an embodiment of pride, nobility, and strength. The horse is also renowned for its beauty, grace, and endurance.

The tree (a Moreton Bay Fig-Native to Eastern Australia) has strong, reaching roots – creating a solid source of grounding and nourishment for the central female figure.

The woman featured is striding out and looking directly at the viewer. She wears red – a colour of energy and passion and her stance suggests both strength and purpose. Her hand is connected to the horse signifying confident forward movement.

The open sea/ waves behind the tree evoke the living abundance of the world’s oceans. Their turbulence may also reflect on the turbulence of strong emotions - the tides and currents that flow within us all through the pathway of life.

The Swift Parrot flying up freely towards the sky pictures freedom and fresh horizons. This colourful bird is often seen in the gardens surrounding the Homestead.

Roses are traditional flowers of passion, love and beauty are visited here by pollinator bees who carry golden pollen to fertilise crops; providing essential food for communities around the world.

Key and chain suggest that compassion and love are solutions to any source of hard restraint upon personal freedom, joy and expression.
