What we're doing

This project will provide a sustainable new water source for Kalkallo Recreation Reserve and support nearby Melbourne Water habitats for threatened species.

As part of the project, we will:

  • Build a new pipeline from the Melbourne Water wetlands near Klandy Drive and Cloverton Boulevard to Kalkallo Recreation Reserve
  • Install a water treatment facility and additional storage tank at the reserve to supply recycled water for irrigating sports fields
  • Plan for a future connection to new Growling Grass Frog habitat that Melbourne Water is developing nearby

This infrastructure will help reduce reliance on drinking water while supporting both community recreation and local biodiversity.

Why are we doing these works?

This project will deliver a range of benefits for the community and the environment, including:

  • A climate-resilient sports reserve
The use of treated stormwater, supported by recycled water, means no drinking water will be used to irrigate the sports grounds.

  • Improved health of Merri Creek
Stormwater that would otherwise carry pollutants into waterways will be treated and reused for irrigation, reducing environmental impacts.

  • Support for threatened species
Treated water will help supply nearby Growling Grass Frog habitat being developed by Melbourne Water.

When will works commence?

Works are planned to begin in August 2026 and are expected to be completed by June 2027.

The timing of these works is subject to the tender process and the availability of a preferred contractor.

Partnerships

Council is partnering with Melbourne Water and the State Government to deliver this project.
